Introduction
Investigation problem. Holidays have become British people’s life part since times immemorial. They were originally established as religious rituals, each subject connected with them had a sacral symbolic meaning. It is also commonly known that wars influenced the British history deeply. Some events with a status of holidays were established after either victories or losses in important battles of these wars.
It is very important to learn about British holidays traditions, because they help us not to abandon our history. As a famous Russian writer N. Karamsin said, language and history are a basis of the society. Learning English, we should get information about British occasions and culture.
The aim of this work is to present meaning for holidays in the British society. The tasks are to present information about holidays in history and their celebration nowadays.
The authors whose works are divided to this theme are: K. Peachey, K. Springer, B.D. Sphynx.
The methods of investigation applied in this work are analysis, comparison, a historic comparison, classification.
Заключение:
We have done a research devoted to holidays. They became British people’s life and were originally established as religious rituals. Some holidays also symbolize the events form the British military history. We have also stated that British holidays traditions help us not to abandon our history, as each holiday symbolizes the action associated with the stages of the humanity life.
The aim and the tasks of this work are realized. We have presented meaning for holidays in the British society. The tasks are to present information about holidays in history and their celebration nowadays. We have also studied the scientific works of such authors as K. Peachey, K. Springer, B.D. Sphynx. Such methods of investigation as analysis, comparison, a historic comparison, classification were applied in this work.
This work can be used by students in their scientific researches in such subjects as country studies, the Course of English- writing and speaking. The information can be applied for reports and course-, diploma papers. The most interesting facts are connected with history of common holidays and their influence on the modern culture.

The British appreciate their holidays, which were established even before the Chrisitan era and developed further.
K. Springer writes that the history of Valentine’s day is interconnected with the priest Valentine, sentenced to a capital punishment by the Christian church for organizing weddings, prohibited by the emperor Claudius II.
R. Rogers writes that Halloween is held on the 31st October, on the eve of the Western Christian holiday of All Saints Day, when people visited their parents’ graves . Since pagan times it has been a common belief that at night on the 31st of October the ancestors’ souls have a feast.
K. Peachey writes that Guy Fawkes' day celebration was established on the 5th of November, in honor of the failed attempt to blow up the parliament people in Great Britain.
Christmas, according to the famous legend, was established after Jesus Christs’ birth. Easter is also one of the Orthodox holidays celebrated in Great Britain. H.
