Environmental Problems
Man began to destroy nature from the very first days of his existence. As human civilization became more complex, the state of ecology on our planet also deteriorated rapidly.
The ecological culture of society began to be actively discussed only at the end of the 20th century. Attention to this issue has increased significantly due to people's rethinking of their scientific achievements.
The threat of a serious environmental crisis put the population of the whole planet before the fact: the survival and development of mankind depends only on him. That is why the formation of an ecological culture is so important for the world community. The UN, created to strengthen security and peace, calls the Environmental Culture program one of its leading projects. This program was established on the basis of UN General Assembly Resolution No. 2997 of December 15, 1972. The main goal is the organization and implementation of measures aimed at protecting and improving the environment for the benefit of generations.
The poisoning of the world's land, air, and water is the fastest-spreading disease of civilisation. It probably produces fewer headlines than wars, earthquakes and floods, but it is potentially one of history's greatest dangers to human life on earth. If present trends continue for the next several decades, our planet will become uninhabitable.
Overpopulation, pollution and energy consumption have created such planet-wide problems as massive deforestation, ozone depletion, acid rains and the global warming that is believed to be caused by the greenhouse effect.
First, scientists recognized the rapid deterioration of the gene pool as one of the most real problems. For several centuries, the number of plant and animal species has been inexorably reduced at high speed. We have already lost about nine hundred thousand species, and this figure continues to grow. Based on his needs and requirements, a person continues to destroy the natural habitat of living organisms, cutting down forests, reducing the number of reservoirs, changing the natural channels of rivers and so on. Every ten minutes one kind of animal, plant or insect dies out for ever. If nothing is done about it, one million species that are alive today will have become extinct twenty years from now.
Secondly, the destruction of forests occurs throughout the planet and even affects parks and protected areas, which are the main supplier of oxygen on the planet. Acid rains also cause considerable damage to the flora, caused by various enterprises, mostly metallurgical plants. In the course of their activities, they pollute the atmosphere with sulfur and nitrogen oxides.
