Means of
Modality Expression in the English Language (Based on Modern Newspaper Texts) 2. The Usage of Modal Verbs in English and German
Newspapers The task of
the journalistic style is to influence the audience through the media in order
to create a certain public opinion. The texts are intended for the general
reader and are aimed not only at logical but also at emotional perception. Main
genres: article, reportage, essay. The style is characterized by social and
political vocabulary, imagery, emotionality along with logic.
By etymology,
the word "publicistic" is close to the word "public",
meaning "listeners", "people". The publicistic style of
speech should be called the language of newspapers and magazines, television
and radio broadcasts, public and political statements, speeches at
celebrations, meetings and rallies.
An important
feature of the style is the combination of message and impact. The speaker uses
it when necessary, not only to convey information, but also to influence the
listeners, to induce them to action. In addition, the author, conveying any
facts to the audience, shows his direct relation to them.
Like other speech styles, the journalistic
style is not uniform. There are two types of it: written and oral. The written
variety of journalistic style includes the language of essays, newspaper and
magazine articles, pamphlets, essays, etc. The oral variety includes the style
of oratory, as well as reviews of radio commentators.
I.R. Halperin, the function of the journalistic
style, which distinguishes it from other speech styles, calls the influence on
the reader or listener in order to convince him of the correctness of the
propositions put forward or to cause in him the desired reaction to what has
been said not so much with logical reasoning as with force, emotional tension
of the statement, showing those features phenomena that can be most effectively
used to achieve the goal [Гальперин 2012].
